How the square footage calculation works

  1. Rectangles: length × width

Measure in feet and convert inches to decimals (6 in = 0.5 ft). A 15 × 12 ft room is 180 sq ft.

  2. Split odd shapes into simple ones

An L-shaped room is two rectangles added together. A circle is 3.1416 × radius², and a triangle is base × height ÷ 2.

  3. Add rooms together

    For a whole floor, measure each room and add them: 15 × 12, 12 × 10 and 10 × 8 ft rooms are 180 + 120 + 80 = 380 sq ft.

  4. Buy more material than the floor area

Add about 10% for cuts and waste. 180 sq ft becomes 198 sq ft of flooring to buy.

  5. Price per sq ft = job price ÷ area

Divide your full job price by the measured area, not the area with waste, to compare with what others quote per square foot.

Worked example. A 15 × 12 ft room is 180 sq ft. With 10% waste you buy 198 sq ft, which costs $693 at $3.50 per sq ft. With 8 labor hours at $50 ($400) and a 20% markup ($218.60), the job price is $1,311.60, or $7.29 per sq ft.

Square Footage FAQ

How do I calculate square footage?

Multiply length by width in feet. For odd shapes, split the space into rectangles, triangles and circles, work out each area and add them up.

How do I convert inches to feet for square footage?

Divide inches by 12 before multiplying. 12 ft 6 in is 12.5 ft, so a 12 ft 6 in × 10 ft room is 125 sq ft.

How many square feet is a 12 × 12 room?

144 sq ft, which is 16 sq yd or about 13.4 square meters.

How do I calculate price per square foot?

Divide the total job price by the area. A $1,311.60 job on 180 sq ft is $7.29 per sq ft. Use the measured area without waste.

How do I calculate the square footage of a house?

Measure each room and hallway, work out each area and add them up, as in the several-rooms mode. Listings and appraisals may count only finished living space, so check how a quoted figure was measured.

How do I convert square meters to square feet?

Multiply square meters by 10.764. 20 m² is about 215.3 sq ft. To go back, multiply square feet by 0.0929: 180 sq ft is about 16.72 m². The result above shows both, plus square yards.

How many square feet are in an acre?

43,560 sq ft. Divide a lot's square footage by 43,560 to get acres.

How much extra flooring should I buy?

About 10% for straight layouts and 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns, plus a spare box for future repairs.
