How the eBay fee calculation works

eBay keeps 13.6% of most sales plus a per-order fee; see every fee and what lands in your account after item cost and shipping.

  1. eBay adds the buyer's sales tax

The fee is charged on everything the buyer pays, including the sales tax eBay collects for the state. You never receive that tax.

  2. The final value fee is a share of that total

Most categories pay 13.6% on the first $7,500 and 2.35% above it. Books, jewelry, guitars and a few others use different rates.

  3. A fixed fee is added per order

$0.40 when the order total is over $10, $0.30 when it's $10 or less.

  4. Ads and international sales cost extra

A promoted listing charges your ad rate on the total. Buyers outside the US add a 1.65% international fee.

  5. Your own costs come off last

What you paid for the item and the shipping label aren't eBay fees, but they decide whether the sale made money.

Worked example. A $20.00 sale with 8% sales tax is charged on $21.60: 13.6% is $2.94, plus $0.40 per order. After an $8.00 item and a $4.50 label you keep $4.16, a 20.8% margin. Below $15.12 the same item loses money.

eBay Fee FAQ

How much does eBay take from a sale?

For most categories, 13.6% of the total the buyer pays (including sales tax and shipping you charge) plus $0.40 per order. On a $20 sale with 8% tax that's $3.34.

Does eBay charge fees on sales tax?

Yes. The final value fee is worked out on the total the buyer pays, including sales tax and any shipping you charge them.

I charge the buyer for shipping. How do I enter that?

Enter it under "Shipping charged to buyer" and what the label costs you under "Shipping label you pay". eBay's fee is worked out on the shipping you charge as well as the item price.

What is the per-order fee?

A fixed fee on every order: $0.40 when the order total is over $10, and $0.30 when it's $10 or less.

Why is my real fee slightly different?

eBay rounds each fee to the cent, may apply lower Store rates, and adds charges this calculator doesn't cover, such as below-standard performance fees. Treat the result as an estimate.
