How the carpet cleaning price calculation works
Estimate the time
4 rooms of 200 sq ft is 800 sq ft: 2 hours at 400 sq ft an hour. 13 stair steps at 2 minutes add 26 minutes, and setup and driving 45: 3 h 11 min.
Multiply by your rate
At $60 an hour that's $191.
Add chemicals and overhead
$20 of chemicals and a $25 share of the machine, fuel and insurance make $236.
Add profit
25% profit gives $295: $73.75 per room, about $0.37 per sq ft. Jobs under your $150 minimum are billed at $150.
Worked example. Cleaning 4 rooms of 200 sq ft and 13 stairs takes about 3 h 11 min at 400 sq ft an hour with 45 minutes of setup. At $60 an hour plus $45 of chemicals and overhead and 25% profit, charge $295, or $73.75 a room, earning $78.53 an hour.
Carpet Cleaning Price FAQ
How much should I charge for carpet cleaning?
Estimate the hours from the square footage and your pace, add stairs, spot treatment and setup, multiply by your rate, then add chemicals, overhead and profit. Check local prices before you publish yours.
How much does carpet cleaning cost?
There is no official national price; it depends on local rates, room size, stairs, soil and the cleaner's costs. With this page's default inputs (4 rooms of 200 sq ft, 13 stairs, $60 an hour), the job comes to $295. Replace the defaults with your own numbers and compare written quotes from local cleaners.
Should I charge per room or per square foot?
Per room is easier for customers; per square foot is fairer for big rooms. The calculator shows both from the same job, so you can quote either.
How do I work out a price per square foot?
Divide the job price by the square feet cleaned. With the default inputs, $295 ÷ 800 sq ft is about $0.37 per sq ft. Small jobs cost more per square foot because setup and drive time are spread over fewer feet.
How much should I charge for stairs?
Time how long a step takes you. At 2 minutes a step and $60 an hour, 13 steps add $26 of time before overhead and profit.
Should pet stain treatment cost extra?
Yes, if it takes extra time or product. Add the minutes, and its price rises with your hourly rate.
What minimum should I charge?
Enough to cover setup, drive time and at least an hour of cleaning. Enter it; small jobs are billed at the minimum.
