How the hours and minutes calculation works

  1. Enter each time as hours and minutes

    Type 3 and 45 for 3 h 45 min. Minutes over 59 are fine: 90 minutes counts as 1 h 30 min.

  2. Choose add or subtract for each line

Subtract an unpaid break or time already paid. Blank lines are skipped.

  3. Add the minutes, then carry every 60 into an hour

    45 + 30 + 50 − 45 = 80 minutes, which is 1 h 20 min. Add that to 3 + 2 + 1 = 6 hours: 7 h 20 min.

  4. Divide by 60 for decimal hours

7 h 20 min is 440 minutes, and 440 ÷ 60 = 7.33 hours. That is the number to multiply by an hourly rate.

Worked example. A worker logs three jobs: 3 h 45 min, 2 h 30 min and 1 h 50 min, and 45 minutes of that was an unpaid break. The total is 440 minutes, or 7 h 20 min, which is 7.33 decimal hours.

Hours and Minutes FAQ

How do I add hours and minutes?

Add the hours and the minutes separately, then turn every 60 minutes into an hour. 3 h 45 min + 2 h 30 min is 5 h 75 min, which is 6 h 15 min.

How do I subtract hours and minutes?

Convert both times to minutes, subtract, then convert back. 7 h 15 min − 2 h 40 min is 435 − 160 = 275 minutes, which is 4 h 35 min.

How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. 7 h 20 min is 7 + 20 ÷ 60 = 7.33 hours. 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 is 0.5 and 45 is 0.75.

Why does my total look wrong when I add times on a normal calculator?

A normal calculator counts in hundreds, but an hour has 60 minutes. 1.45 + 1.30 gives 2.75, but 1 h 45 min + 1 h 30 min is 3 h 15 min. Convert to minutes or decimal hours first.

How do I calculate pay from hours and minutes?

Convert the time to decimal hours, then multiply by the hourly rate. 7 h 20 min is 7.33 hours; at $20 an hour that is $146.67.

Is this the same as the hours worked calculator?

No. This page adds up durations you already know. The hours worked calculator finds the time between a start and an end time, and the time card calculator totals a week of shifts.
