- Overtime pay
Each overtime hour pays $30.00 instead of $20.00.
How the overtime calculation works
Overtime pay at time and a half or double time, and the total gross pay for the week.
Overtime hours are hours over the weekly limit
Federally that limit is 40 hours in a workweek for non-exempt staff. 46 hours worked is 6 hours of overtime.
The overtime rate is the regular rate × 1.5
At $20 an hour, time and a half is $30 an hour. Double time is $40.
Gross pay is regular pay plus overtime pay
40 × $20 = $800, plus 6 × $30 = $180, gives $980 for the week.
Check your state's rules
Some states add daily overtime. California, for example, pays 1.5× after 8 hours in a day and 2× after 12. Enter the hours that apply.
Worked example. At $20 an hour, 46 hours in a week is 40 regular hours ($800) plus 6 overtime hours at $30 ($180), for $980 gross pay.
Overtime FAQ
How do I calculate overtime pay?
Multiply the hourly rate by 1.5 to get the overtime rate, then multiply by the hours over 40. Add that to 40 hours at the regular rate.
What is time and a half for common hourly rates?
Multiply by 1.5: $15 → $22.50, $18 → $27, $20 → $30, $25 → $37.50, $30 → $45 an hour. Double time is 2×: $15 → $30, $20 → $40, $25 → $50.
Is overtime paid after 8 hours a day?
Not under federal law, which uses 40 hours a week. A few states also require daily overtime. In California it is 1.5× for hours over 8 up to 12 in a workday, 2× over 12, and on a seventh straight workday 1.5× for the first 8 hours and 2× after (California DIR). Our California Overtime Calculator applies these daily rules to hours entered for each day.
Is overtime pay taxed?
Yes, overtime is wages and is subject to withholding and payroll taxes. For 2025–2028 you can deduct the qualified overtime premium from federal taxable income, up to $12,500 a year ($25,000 joint), with income limits. Our No Tax on Overtime Calculator works out your deduction.
Do salaried employees get overtime?
Only if they are non-exempt. Exemption depends on salary level and job duties under the FLSA. Being paid a salary isn't enough on its own.
