How the pay raise & salary increase calculation works

  1. New pay = current pay × (1 + raise %)

    A 4% raise on $52,000 gives $54,080, or $2,080 more a year.

  2. Raise % = raise ÷ current pay × 100

    $1.50 more on a $20 hourly rate is a 7.5% raise.

  3. Hourly raises × hours × 52 give the yearly effect

    $1.50 an hour at 40 hours a week is $3,120 a year.

  4. Divide by 26 for the paycheck difference

$2,080 a year is $80 more per biweekly paycheck before tax.

Worked example. A 4% raise on a $52,000 salary makes the new salary $54,080. That is $2,080 more a year, $173.33 more a month and $80 more per biweekly paycheck.

Pay Raise & Salary Increase FAQ

How do I calculate a salary increase?

Multiply your salary by the increase percent and add it on: a 4% increase on $52,000 is $52,000 × 0.04 = $2,080, so the new salary is $54,080. If you know the new salary instead, divide the difference by the old salary to get the percent.

How do I calculate a pay raise percentage?

Divide the raise by the old pay and multiply by 100. Going from $20 to $21.50 an hour is $1.50 ÷ $20 = 7.5%.

What is a 3% raise on $50,000?

$1,500 a year, for a new salary of $51,500. That is $125 more a month before tax.

How much is a $1 an hour raise per year?

$2,080 a year at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks.

How much more will I take home after a raise?

Less than the gross raise, because income tax and 7.65% FICA come out of it. A raise does not push your whole pay into a higher bracket; only the extra dollars are taxed at the higher rate.

What does a raise cost the employer?

The raise plus the employer's share of payroll taxes on it, at least 7.65% for Social Security and Medicare. A $2,080 raise costs the employer about $2,239 or more.
