How the tip calculation works
Start from the bill before tax
The check shows a subtotal for food and drinks, then the tax. Here the subtotal is $84.50 and the tax is $7.80.
Multiply by the tip percentage
20% of $84.50 is $16.90. To tip on the total with tax instead, 20% of $92.30 is $18.46.
Add bill, tax and tip
$84.50 + $7.80 + $16.90 = $109.20.
Split it
$109.20 between 4 people is $27.30 each. Rounding each share up to $28 adds $2.80 to the tip.
Worked example. On an $84.50 bill with $7.80 of tax, a 20% tip on the pre-tax amount is $16.90, for a $109.20 total. Split between 4 people, each pays $27.30, of which $4.23 is tip.
Tip FAQ
How do I calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage: 20% is × 0.20. A quick way is to take 10% (move the decimal one place) and double it: 10% of $84.50 is $8.45, so 20% is $16.90.
Should you tip on the bill before or after tax?
Either is common. Many people tip on the subtotal before tax, since tax isn't part of the service; tipping on the total gives a slightly bigger tip. Pick it above.
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the US, many people tip 15% to 20% or more for table service. The calculator shows the total at several percentages so you can choose.
How do I split a bill with a tip?
Add the tip to the bill and tax, then divide by the number of people. If people ordered very different amounts, work out each person's items separately.
What is 15%, 18%, 20% and 25% of a bill? (tip chart)
On a $50 bill: $7.50, $9.00, $10.00 and $12.50. On $100: $15, $18, $20 and $25. On $150: $22.50, $27, $30 and $37.50. The result above lists your own bill at each rate.
Is a service charge the same as a tip?
Not always. Some restaurants add an automatic service charge for large groups; check the check before adding another tip on top.
