How the lawn mowing price calculation works
Count drive time as work time
45 minutes on site plus 15 minutes of driving is 1 hour you need to be paid for.
Multiply by your hourly rate
1 hour at $45 is $45. Use the pay you want, or your crew's pay including payroll taxes.
Add fuel, wear and overhead
$4 of fuel and equipment wear plus a $6 share of insurance and other overhead brings the cost to $55.
Add profit and set the monthly price
20% profit makes the price $66 per cut. Four visits a month is $264.
Worked example. A lawn that takes 45 minutes to mow, with 15 minutes of driving, costs $55 at a $45 hourly rate with $4 of fuel and a $6 overhead share. With 20% profit you charge $66 per cut, or $264 for four visits a month, and earn $56.00 an hour.
Lawn Mowing Price FAQ
How much should I charge to mow a lawn?
Add up your time on site and driving, multiply by your hourly rate, add fuel and a share of overhead, then add profit. The calculator gives the price per cut.
Should I charge by the hour or per lawn?
Most clients prefer a flat price per cut. Work it out from your hours, as here, so a flat price still covers your time and costs.
How do I price lawn mowing by square foot or acre?
Time a few lawns to learn your pace, then estimate minutes from the lawn size. The price per 1,000 sq ft shown helps you quote similar lawns quickly. An acre is 43,560 sq ft, but don't just multiply a small-lawn rate up to an acre: a bigger mower may cover large open lawns faster, so time one acre-size job and enter those minutes.
How do I set a monthly lawn mowing price?
Multiply the price per cut by the visits in the month. In the example, $66 per cut and four visits is $264 a month. On weekly service some months have five visits, not four, so you can also average the visits over the season to keep the monthly bill the same.
Can homeowners use this as a lawn mowing cost calculator?
Yes. Enter the time a contractor is likely to spend and a local hourly rate to see what a fair quote has to cover. It shows the cost of the work, not a market price, so compare it with a few real quotes.
What is the typical price for mowing a lawn?
Typical ranges differ a lot by region and lawn size. Check local competitors, then confirm your price covers your costs and time with this calculator.
How much should I charge for trimming and edging?
Include the extra minutes in your time on site. If some clients want mowing only, quote them separately with fewer minutes.
