How the tree removal cost calculation works

  1. Estimate crew hours

A crew of 3 for 4 hours is 12 crew hours. At $35 an hour each, including payroll taxes and workers' comp, that's $420.

  2. Add equipment and disposal

$250 of chipper, truck and saw costs for the job and $80 of dump fees bring the cost to $750.

  3. Add stump grinding

    A 24-inch stump at $4 per inch is $96, for a $846 total cost.

  4. Add markup

A 30% markup gives a price of $1,099.80. Stump grinding is $124.80 of that, so you can quote it separately.

Worked example. Removing a tree with a 3-person crew for 4 hours at $35 an hour ($420), $250 of equipment, $80 of disposal and grinding a 24-inch stump at $4 an inch ($96) costs $846. With a 30% markup, quote $1,099.80, of which $124.80 is stump grinding.

Tree Removal Cost FAQ

How much does tree removal cost?

It depends on the tree's height, trunk diameter and location, how much climbing and rigging it needs, and whether the stump and wood are removed. Enter the crew hours and costs for the job to see the price.

How much should I charge for tree removal?

Work out the crew hours, multiply by your cost per crew member per hour, add equipment, disposal and stump grinding, then add a markup for insurance, overhead and profit.

How much should I charge for stump grinding?

Many tree services charge per inch of stump diameter, measured at ground level, with a minimum per stump. Enter your rate per inch; the calculator adds it with your markup.

Is stump grinding included in tree removal?

Often not. Quote it as a separate line so the customer can choose, as the calculator shows.

How much does stump grinding cost?

There is no official price list; it is your rate per inch of diameter times the stump size, plus markup. In the example, a 24-inch stump at $4 per inch is $96 of cost, or $124.80 with a 30% markup. Set a minimum charge for small stumps.

Do I need insurance for tree work?

OSHA lists falls, falling objects and electrical contact among tree care hazards. Workers' comp rules and any tree service licensing are set by your state, so check with your state agency. Put the cost of your insurance in the hourly crew cost and the markup.

Can my crew cut trees near power lines?

Under OSHA 1910.333, a worker who is not qualified for electrical work, and any conductive object they hold, must stay at least 10 feet from an energized overhead line of 50 kV or less, and further for higher voltages. Line-clearance tree trimming closer than that is covered by OSHA 1910.269. If a job needs it, add the extra hours or a subcontractor to the estimate.
