How the PayPal fee calculation works
The PayPal fee on a goods and services payment, a PayPal Checkout or invoice payment, a card payment or a QR code payment, and what you receive, or what to charge to receive an exact amount.
The rate depends on how you get paid
A goods and services payment sent in the PayPal app costs 2.99% with no fixed fee, so $2.99 on $100. PayPal Checkout and invoices paid with PayPal cost 3.49% + $0.49 ($3.98 on $100). Cards paid through an invoice or payment link cost 2.99% + $0.49, and QR codes 2.29% + $0.09.
International buyers cost more
Commercial payments from outside the US add 1.50% on top, so a $100 goods and services payment costs $4.49 and a $100 checkout payment $5.48.
Friends and family payments are different
Personal payments funded from a PayPal balance or bank are free, but they carry no purchase protection. Selling goods this way breaks PayPal's rules.
To receive an exact amount, divide by (1 − rate)
Add any fixed fee to the amount you want, then divide by 1 minus the rate. To receive $100 by goods and services: $100 ÷ 0.9701 = $103.08. By invoice: ($100 + $0.49) ÷ 0.9651 = $104.12.
Worked example. A $100.00 goods and services payment from a US buyer costs 2.99%, a $2.99 fee, so you receive $97.01. To receive the full $100.00 you would ask for $103.08. The same $100 paid through PayPal Checkout or an invoice costs $3.98 (3.49% + $0.49).
PayPal Fee FAQ
How much is the PayPal fee for goods and services?
For a US goods and services payment sent in the PayPal app, PayPal's table lists 2.99% with no fixed fee: $50 costs $1.50 and you receive $48.50. Payments through PayPal Checkout or an invoice cost 3.49% + $0.49 instead: $50 costs $2.24.
How much should I charge so I receive $100 after PayPal fees?
$103.08 for a goods and services payment, or $104.12 for an invoice or PayPal Checkout payment. Switch the calculator to "Find what to charge" for any other amount; it rounds up to the cent so you never fall short.
What is the PayPal invoice fee?
An invoice paid with a PayPal account, Venmo or Guest Checkout costs 3.49% + $0.49. An invoice paid by card, Apple Pay or another wallet costs 2.99% + $0.49 (PayPal US fee table, 1 Oct 2026).
Who pays the PayPal goods and services fee?
The seller. PayPal takes the fee out of the payment before it reaches your balance, so the buyer pays the listed price only.
Is there a fee for friends and family payments?
No fee for a US personal payment funded by a PayPal balance or bank account. Paying by card adds a fee for the sender, and international personal payments have their own charges.
Why is my PayPal fee different from this result?
PayPal uses different rates for card payments through its advanced checkout, QR codes, micropayments, charities and currency conversion. Edit the rate and fixed fee to match the fee shown in your account.
