How the Stripe fee calculation works

The Stripe fee on an online card payment, a keyed-in card, an in-person or Tap to Pay charge, or an ACH Direct Debit, and your payout, or what to charge so you receive an exact amount.

  1. Stripe charges a percentage plus a fixed fee

The standard US online rate is 2.9% plus 30¢ per successful domestic card charge. On a $100 charge that's $3.20. A card number typed in by hand adds 0.5%, so $3.70.

  2. In person and ACH cost less

With a Stripe Terminal card reader the rate is 2.7% + 5¢ ($2.75 on $100); Tap to Pay on a phone adds 10¢ per authorization. ACH Direct Debit costs 0.8% and never more than $5, which it reaches at $625.

  3. Foreign cards add a surcharge

A card issued outside the US adds 1.5%, and converting currency adds another 1%. A $100 online charge with both costs $5.70.

  4. To receive an exact amount, divide by (1 − rate)

Add the fixed fee to the amount you want, then divide by 1 minus the rate. To receive $100 by online card: ($100 + $0.30) ÷ 0.971 = $103.30.

  5. Refunds don't return the fee

When you refund a charge, Stripe keeps the original processing and currency conversion fees, so a refunded $100 online sale still costs you $3.20.

Worked example. A $100.00 online charge on a US card costs 2.9% ($2.90) plus $0.30, a $3.20 fee, so you receive $96.80. To receive the full $100.00 you would charge $103.30. The same $100 by ACH Direct Debit costs $0.80.

Stripe Fee FAQ

How much does Stripe charge per transaction?

2.9% + 30¢ for a standard US online card payment. A $50 charge costs $1.75 and you receive $48.25. In person with a card reader it's 2.7% + 5¢, and ACH Direct Debit is 0.8% capped at $5.

How much should I charge to receive $100 after Stripe fees?

$103.30 with the standard online card rate, or $100.81 by ACH Direct Debit. Use "Find what to charge" for any amount; the result is rounded up to the cent.

What is the Stripe ACH fee?

0.8% of the payment with a $5.00 cap. A $100 ACH payment costs $0.80, and any payment of $625 or more costs the full $5, so a $2,000 invoice paid by ACH costs $5 instead of $58.30 by card.

Does Stripe charge more for international cards?

Yes. Cards issued outside the US add 1.5%, and a further 1% applies when currency is converted. A $100 online charge with both costs $5.70.

What is the Stripe invoice fee?

Stripe Invoicing adds 0.4% per paid invoice on the Starter plan, or 0.5% on Plus, on top of the normal payment fee. A $100 invoice paid by card costs $3.20 + $0.40 = $3.60.

What is the Stripe dispute fee?

$15.00 for each dispute (chargeback) you receive, plus $15.00 if you respond to it manually. You get the response fee back if you win the dispute.

Can I pass the Stripe fee on to the customer?

Many businesses build the fee into their price. Adding a separate card surcharge is restricted in some states and by card network rules, so check before you do it.

Are there other Stripe fees?

Yes, for some features: Billing, Tax, Radar for Fraud Teams and Connect have their own pricing. Stripe has no setup or monthly fee on standard pricing.
